Microbial Cells Bioprocessing

Microbial cells can be engineered to act as efficient factories for producing a wide range of bioprocess products, from agriculture and food additives to very high value products including including pDNA and pharmaceuticals such as vaccines and recombinant proteins among others. They are normally chose for a number of characteristics such as their rapid growth and the genetic manipulability as well as their such as their versatility and scalability, that are attributes so seeked in companies.

Why Bionet?

We provide bioreactors, TFF and a series of services oriented to design the right environment to satisfy from the most common to the most challenging microbial processes in order to obtain ambitious KPIs (in terms of cells, product formation quality and productivities or other project related issues). All this while guaranteeing robustness and seeking optimization and scalability in all terms.

Beyond world-class technology, we continue to bring tangible assets to microbial applications with a team of experts specialized in microbiology, as well as microbiology-oriented facilities (including a laboratory and pilot plant) and ongoing scientific activities of various types.

End-to-end Solutions

Have a complete range of bioprocessing equipment and support for the entire life cycle of your process

  • A complete range of multi-purpose and single-use bioreactors, from 0.35 to 5,000 L stirred, airlift and 2D rocking models, designed to meet the diverse needs of microbial cells at different stages of development, from R&D to commercial production. This wide range allows you to do so under the same technological umbrella, avoiding the complexities of having different suppliers and easing the learning curve while ensuring scalability.
  • Bionet has a microbial-oriented laboratory and a pilot plant, where we deploy a range of services to clients (from consulting to engineering to empirical), as well as where we work 24/7 to bring innovation in specific areas of microbial processing.

Streamline strain selection, fermentation optimization and scale-up activities to obtain the best possible KPIs

  • Do some proof-of-concept testing, optimization or scale-up with us to ensure you select, optimize and scale-up the strain with the highest attributes towards desired pathways while minimizing byproduct formation and ensuring industrial feasibility at all times.
  • As part of Bionet's range of bioreactors are the Celltainer 2D rocking ones, with which very high kLa and OD can be achieved, especially relevant in high cell density cultures such as E. coli and P. Pastoris.
  • The wide range of volumes and technology types offered by Bionet allows you to move from strain selection to industrial production under the same technological umbrella, avoiding the complexities of having different suppliers and easing the learning curve while ensuring scalability.
  • Our Plug&Play add-ons allow the bioprocess to grow in the required directions to ensure maximum productivity. Unrestricted from the initial decisions, hardware expansion (from a range of PATs and actuators) and associated software functionalities in terms of monitoring, visualization, control and data logging are always available. Once the process is characterized, there is always room for productivity improvement. An example of this is the optimization of the specific nutrient addition profile, with the aim of minimizing costs while maximizing yield.

Ensure and smoothen product recovery and concentration

Get trained in the latest technological and process advances

  • Beyond the aforementioned bioprocess-focused services, Bionet believes that education is the key to everything, including bioprocesses. With our academy located at our pilot plant, where we have a number of well-equipped bioreactors and TFFs of different sizes, we organize on-site theoretical and practical courses on fermentation and TFFs in various formats. Upon request, these courses can also take place at the customer's premises.

Concrete solutions by our technologies

Dissolved oxygen control and supply that ensure sufficient oxygen for microbial metabolism and growth

Bionet’s bioreactors come, in their most basic configuration, with: a range of aeration (1x MFC for air supply via Sparger by default) and agitation actuators to ensure transfer (Rushton by default, in the case of stirred bioreactors); a number of associated software control functionalities (from direct gas flow configuration to DO cascade modes and time profile DO programming tool) and accessories (baffles among others).
Beyond the default configurations, there is a wide selection of accessories (including impellers, Spargers of different pore sizes, etc), an unmatched gas module in terms of configurability (with a number of optional MFCs in different flow ranges and several outlet possibilities), and a number of software expansion possibilities.

Mixing technologies that ensure high kLa, uniform distribution of nutrients, cells and temperature as well as prevents settling of cells
  • Bionet stirred bioreactors count with appropriately designed impellers to provide efficient mixing without damaging cells though shear stress. A number of different accessories and configuration alternatives are available.
  • Bionet's CT 2D rocking bioreactors range excel at reaching high kLa and OD, especially relevant in high-cell density cultures such as E. coli and P. Pastoris.
Well-performing and accurate control of temperature to meet the specifc temperature ranges for maximizing growth and product formation
  • Bionet’s stirred multiuse bioreactors include jackets that cover the vessels at the most crucial points (except for the single-wall F0-BABY bioreactors that has a cooling finger and a heating blanket).
  • Bionet’s 2D rocking bioreactors
  • All Bionet's bioraectors have a number of software functionalities to monitor and control the desired temperature
Continuous monitoring of pH

To ensure it remains within the optimal range for the specific microbial culture, Bionet bioreactors count with pH sensors of the leading brands, acid and base pumps (CO2 supply if necessary as an acidying agent instead) and a number software functionalitites including pre-determined control loops, time profile programming, equation-based controls and recipe programming tools among others.
