What is it used for?

The Celltainer is a single-use pilot bioreactor with patented two-dimensional rocking technology, designed for R&D, process optimisation, and small-scale production. It excels in growing high-density cultures, including E. coli, Pichia pastoris, fungi, plant, mammalian cells and human stem cells. With exceptional mixing and mass transfer capabilities at low shear and minimal foaming, it offers superior performance across various applications.

Customisation options

The Celltainer series includes the CT1, CT2, and CT3 models, with working volumes ranging from 0,15 L to 150 L. Its Plug&Play design, along with customisable rocking angles and speeds, ensures easy integration and adaptability for different cell types and processes. Enhance your bioprocessing with the flexibility and efficiency of the Celltainer series.

2D Rocking Tecnology

The Celltainer’s patented 2D rocking technology provides a unique and efficient method for mixing and oxygen transfer.

Unlike traditional bioreactors, this technology rocks the vessel in two dimensions—back-and-forth and side-to-side—creating a gentle, oscillatory motion that promotes uniform mixing and optimal gas exchange.

The system allows precise adjustment of both rocking angle and speed. By modifying these settings, you can tailor the motion to suit low-shear sensitive cultures or high-oxygen demanding cells. This flexibility minimises shear stress and reduces foaming, leading to improved cell growth, higher yields, and consistent performance across a range of applications.

Key benefits

  • Scale seamlessly across a working volume range from 0,15 L to 170 L;
  • Ensure consistent scalability throughout the production line with mass transfer rates comparable to stirred tank reactors (STR);
  • Minimize contamination risks associated with transfer steps by scaling from 0,25 L to 25 L in the same bag, using Bionet’s expansion set.
  • Achieve high oxygen transfer with adjustable rocking angles and speeds tailored for both low-shear cultures and high-oxygen demanding cells;
  • Maximise density and protein production with precise kLa control and G/L mass transfer rates above 400 hr⁻¹;
  • Ensure optimal temperature control with an efficient bottom heat exchanger;
  • Maintain consistent product quality with Process Analytical Technology (PAT) monitoring for pH, DO, temperature, pressure, and exhaust gas.
  • Eliminate the need for antifoam with foam-breaking waves created by 2D rocking motion;
  • Significantly reduce expenses for bags with up to 100-fold expandability in one bag (available for CT1 and CT2);
  • Enhance your production process, eliminate need for sterilisation and save CIP and SIP validation steps by using gamma-sterilised single-use bags;
  • Reduce capital and operational costs by minimising the need for additional equipment, consumables, and labour.
  • Achieve efficient mixing and aeration without the need for a stirrer or sparger;
  • Eliminate facility footprint by stacking up to three units (of CT1 or CT2) to maximise space utilisation;
  • Eliminate the need for extra equipment and significantly save space by scaling in the same bag.
  • Short delivery time of 8-10 weeks allows you to adapt to changes and new projects.

Product features

Single-use bags for the Celltainer

Designed for versatility, Celltainer’s single-use bags cater to a wide range of cell lines, ensuring reliable performance across various applications. Each bag is equipped with single-use sensors for pH and dissolved oxygen (DO), providing precise monitoring and control for optimal growth conditions.

The customisable design allows for tailored adaptation to your specific needs. Additionally, with no moving parts, the bags reduce the risk of mechanical failure and associated costs. They delivered gamma-sterilized, eliminating the need for further sterilization and simplifying your production process.

Expansion channel
Expansion set

The Celltainer expansion set features four distinct blocks and a patented cup design that supports precise pH and DO measurement even at low liquid volumes. Initially, the bag is placed over the expansion channels, with sensors positioned for accurate monitoring.

As the working volume increases, you can easily adapt by removing or repositioning blocks. This modular approach allows for step-by-step expansion from low volumes to up to 15 L, providing exceptional flexibility and scalability for your bioprocess.
