Production Bioreactor | Working volume from 30L to 150L in one bag
What is it used for?
The CT3 is a unique single-use bioreactor with a patented 2D rocking motion. It’s designed for R&D, process optimisation and seeding. This bioreactor supports a variety of applications, including high-density microbial cultures, high-viscosity cultures such as filamentous fungi, complex cultures like plant cells, and mammalian or human stem cells. Its versatility makes it suitable for use across different industries.
Customisation options
The Celltainer CT3 offers extensive customization for both equipment and bags, ensuring it meets your specific needs and complies with GMP guidelines. Due to a variety of Plug&Play accessories and software options, the CT2 can be tailored for different applications. Its flexibility makes it suitable for handling microbial, mammalian, plant, and insect cells, adapting easily to changing project requirements and multipurpose use.
Celltainer's patented 'cup design' for the single-use bottom-mounted sensors allows for starting with reduced working volumes at stable readings and control. The sensors are covered with medium during movement for stable read-out of pH and DO values and the medium in the cup design is refreshed with every movement.
With the use of bottom-placed probes, minimal starting volumes of 0.25L and a maximum of 25L in the same bag are feasible. Save SIP, and CIP validation steps by using the CT2 as a seed train.
Celltainer's patented 2D movement profile ensures kLa values of >400 h⁻¹ supporting high cell-density microbial cultivations in single-use equipment.
Celltainer patented 2D rocking movement, which no one else can provide, offers unparalleled power input per volume and G/L mass transfer above 400 h⁻¹ kLa so that higher density and protein production levels are achieved at low shear in single-use technologies.
By offering adjustment of rocking angle, speed, highly customisable bags and a range of plug&play add-ons, the Celltainer is highly configurable and expandable which makes it possible to handle microbial, mammalian, plant and insect cells in the same device, adapting to your evolving project and/or multipurpose plant.
Our E.coli cultivation studies demonstrate consistent optical densities across different scales: 2L STR, 12L CELL-tainer CT2, and 120L CELL-tainer CT3 models. Leveraging advanced CFD models for CT1 and CT2, we ensure scalable results in mixing time, power input, and mass transfer under various conditions. These models are validated through rigorous experiments, ensuring reliable scale-up for our customers. The CT3 stands as the largest model in the CT series. DOI: 10.1002/cite.201200149
2D movement creates waves that break the foam, typically eliminating the need for antifoam agents. Since foam is not generated by aeration rate due to headspace aeration rather than sparging, no additional antifoam is required.
The CT2 bioreactor offers a stackable design (up to 3 units) to maximize lab floor space. It features a plug-and-play setup, eliminating the need for sterilization, as bags are gamma-sterilized and come with single-use sensors (pH, DO). With no moving parts in the bag, you benefit from reduced consumable costs and minimized risk of failures.
CT2 features CFD models that ensure mixing time, power input, and mass transfer scalability across various rocking angles, speeds, working volumes, and bag shapes. We validate these models through running experiments to support seamless scale-up for our customers. The CT3, as the largest model in the CT series, extends this scalability to larger production needs.
Reduce your financial risks by renting one of our CT2 bioreactor before deciding to purchase a CT3. Convince yourself with proof-of-concept studies or transfer your in-house process to the Celltainer CT2. We guarantee scalability through our product range.
Our approach to GMP is structured so that design, construction and control can be tailored to your specific project and regulatory needs to enable validation of your processes from standard to GMP.

A patented 2D rocking movement gives very high power input with mass transfer up to 400 h-1 kLa, and very short mixing time without the shear stress of an impeller.
2D movement generates waves which are foam-breaking. Usually, no antifoam is needed. No foam is generated by aeration rate due to headspace aeration instead of sparging.
By offering adjustment of rocking angle, speed, highly customizable bags and with a range of plug&play add-ons, the CELL-tainer is highly configurable and expandable which makes it possible to handle microbial, mammalian, plant and insect cells in the same device, adapting to your evolving project and/or multipurpose plant.
With the use of bottom placed probes, minimal starting volumes of 0.25L and maximum 25L in one and the same bag are feasible. Save SIP, CIP validation steps by using the CT2 as seed train.
Celltainer patented 2D rocking movement, that no one else can provide, offers unparallel power input per volume and G/L mass transfer above 400 h-1 kLa, so that higher density and protein production levels are achieved at low shear in single-use technologies.
The CT2 is stackable, thus saving valuable space in your lab.
Plug-and-play equipment. Bag ports and main components are easily accessible and customizable.
Plug-and-play machines. No sterilization necessary, bags are delivered gamma-sterilized, equipped with single-use sensors (pH, DO).
Both the CT1 and CT2 have CFD models behind, to assure that results can be scaled-up and down in terms of mixing time, power input and mass transfer at different rocking angles, rocking speeds, working volumes and bag shapes. We run experiments to confirm those models and support our customers scale-up. The CT3 is the largest size in the CT series.
Patented 2D movement offers high mixing and high mass transfer capacity.
